Well Robby and I were driving and we noticed that two dirt roads before us had been blocked off by security all day so we took a drive with our friend Jenny and found out that our neighbors with an exotic animal sanctuary was surprised with a trip to Costa Rica and an Extreme home -makeover!!
(Best Syndication News) Phelan California is buzzing with action this week as ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition came to town . The network, along with volunteers and contributors, is building a home for the Almquist family. If you have been to the Phelan Phun Days you may have seen some of the animals they take care of.
The Almquist family runs the Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary which is a rescue for wild animals. They provide a home for wild animals that have been abandoned or need rescuing. The animals include nine tigers, 10 alligators, four servals, four Mexican beaded lizards, three sulcata tortoises, three parrots, two Siberian lynx and one Egyptian cobra.
The family never wants to turn away any animal, despite the fact that they have to feed all of those critters. As you might expect, their house was showing signs of wear. According to the report filed by Extreme Makeover, their doublewide trailer was falling apart.
Their home lacked both heat and air conditioning. That can be a problem in the high desert where temperatures reach 110 degrees and above during the summer and mid teens during the winter. There were holes in the floor and leaking pipes patched up with duct tape.
But there was hope for the family. Ty Pennington and his team of professional volunteers are constructing a brand new upscale ranch house for the Almquists.
The public is encouraged to come and see the progress. The home is located at 8545 Buttemere Road in Phelan, California 92371 (see map below). Spectator hours are between 8a.m. -7p.m. Monday, February 2nd through Saturday the 7th. The “move that bus” ceremony will take place on Saturday. The public is not allowed to bring chairs to that part of the event.
